A member of the slowly but steadily increasing Dark Magical Girl genre, Yuki Yuna is a Hero is a beautiful yet painful series. In year 300, Era of the Gods, Yuki Yuna, a second year middle school girl, is a cheerful and dedicated member of the community, bravely helping out anyone in need. As a member of her schools Brave Hero Club, she does everything she can to make the world a better place, alongside her fellow club members Togo Mimori, Inubozaki Fu-senpai, and Inubozaki Itsuki. And then a blinding light froze everything and transported the unsuspecting members of the Hero Club to what seems to be another world. Fu-senpai reveals that they are part of the larger scheme of things, and have been selected to wield the power to fight against the Vertexes, that seek to destroy the great Shinju tree, the god who protects and blesses humanity. They work diligently for the sake of the Shinju, before the darker secret behind their powers is revealed.
The series really digs deep on the existential terror of having great power, but having to make irreversible sacrifices. While the consequences the Hero Club faces become obsolete by the end of the series, there's still a very deep message that sticks with viewers long after they've finished watching. Truly a work of art that has made its mark in the anime history books, and something that should be watched.
